You Plus Smoking Equals Lung Cancer

Whenever a person smokes a cigarette, the fine taste of tobacco is not the only thing that travels down to his or her lungs. The poisonous chemicals contained in smoke, and lung cancer goes hand-in-hand down to the person's lungs and most probably to his or her doom.

Several studies prove that smoking is strongly linked with lung cancer and other cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder, cervix, etc. It was believed that smokers are much more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers. This belief had already been proved many times by several scientific and demographics studies, which projects that the incidence of lung cancer is very much associated with the level of cigarette intake of smokers. Lung cancer is the single-greatest cause of death in most industrialized nations.

How does smoking cause lung cancer? Lung cancer begins when the carcinogens contained in smokes (nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, etc.) affect the DNA of the cells in the bronchial lining, causing them to mutate. When the cells mutate, they would start to multiply at a rate faster than normal. The accumulating cells would then interfere with mucus elimination.

Soon, the rapidly multiplying cancer cells would soon become malignant, causing different kinds of lung illnesses. The symptoms of the cancer would be the only time that the smoker realizes he or she is sick. In fact, the lung cancer would be in terminal stage 1 by that time, which means that there is already a growing and active tumor inside.

However, a non-smoker can still have lung cancer because of passive smoking. Passive smoking is when non-smokers inhale the exhaled smoke from smokers. The exhaled smoke is “dirtier” because it already contains more carbon dioxide, which has been produced by the smoker's lungs.

Governments are currently promoting a decrease in smoking consumption. However, merely requiring smoking companies to indicate warnings of smoking on their packs is not enough. Decrease of smoking, and ultimately prevention of lung cancer requires a lot more than empty warnings. What is needed are laws in limiting the production smoking products and the complete cooperation of citizens in battling smoking and lung cancer.
